. today we saw officially just an unprecedented filibuster of defense secretary nominee chuck hagel. is this the worst you've ever seen in congress? >> well, you know, we always say it's the worst. the republicans are just having a hard time. they got their bell rung, and they're trying to fight against hagel, who is actually a republican. mccain seems to be trying to figure a way to get out of this. this thing with rubio last night was just a first-class mess on their part. karl and the tea party are fighting with each other. you know, it's going to take them a little while to figure out where they're going. but right now they're just all confused and don't quite know what way to go. and all they can do is say just the same thing. if you look at rubio, it's the same speech you've heard for the last 30 years. it's nothing there. >> americans get -- i think are upset about this. that's not the term i'd like to use on tv. i'd be a little more brash abou. across the country. number one, they're going on vacation for a couple weeks when we've got this thing looming on march 1st, the seq

on the nomination of defense secretary hopeful chuck hagel despite republican opposition. republicans won a delay of hagel's confirmation vote last week after demanding more information on his financial ties. republican senator lindsey graham of south carolina has vowed to block votes on both hegel and cia nominee john brennan by invoking the partisan dispute over the deadly attacks on u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. speaking to cbs news, lindsey graham said he would place a hold on the votes unless the white house provides confirmation on its response to the incident. >> i don't think we should allow britain to go forward with the cia directorship, hagel to be confirmed as secretary of defense, until the white house gives us an accounting. what did the president do? >> the pentagon has announced an expansion of benefits offered to gay and lesbian couples. members of the military in same- sex relationships will receive full access to base facilities and groups, as well as joint assignments. but a number of benefits will still be denied, including health-insurance coverage and on base housing.
. last night we told you about how the conservative website breitbart.com reported that chuck hagel may have financial ties to a group called friends of hamas. we've got a problem here, folks. friends of hamas does not exist, and the story is bogus. yet the folks at breitbart are not only sticking to the report, they're attacking anyone who even questions it. this is the way conservative media operates these days in the business world. worse yet, instead of throwing water on these baseless stories, elected officials are fueling the fire by responding to them. senator rand paul said he found hagel's possible tied to a non-existent group concerning. and earlier this week senator lindsey graham of south carolina demanded that hagel respond to a rumor about him published by another right-wing blog. in both cases the claims had absolutely no merit. yet pushing these stories helped the right-wing media and republican lawmakers further their agenda. smear hagel and undermine ultimately president obama.
